Spring Clean Your Collection: Organize, Protect & Upgrade Your Coins and Paper Money

March 5, 2026 by Colonial Acres Coins

Last Updated on March 5, 2026 Posted by Colonial Acres Coins

When the snow starts to melt and the sun sticks around a little longer, most people think about tidying closets, garages, and junk drawers. But if you’re a collector, there’s one more place that could really use a good spring clean: your coin and paper money collection.

Whether you’ve been collecting for years or you’ve just been tossing interesting coins and notes into a box, spring is the perfect time to get organized, protect what you have, and plan smart upgrades. And of course, Colonial Acres Coins is here to help with everything from supplies to new additions.

Let’s go step by step.

Step 1: Pull Everything Out and Take a Look

The first rule of spring cleaning your collection is simple: get it all in one place.

  • Empty jars, drawers, and old folders
  • Pull out boxes from closets and under beds
  • Grab any envelopes or flips you’ve “temporarily” stored coins in

Lay everything out on a table or desk. You might be surprised by what you’ve forgotten you had—doubles, old purchases, maybe even a few nicer pieces you set aside “for later”.

As you look things over, start sorting into simple piles:

  • Canadian coins (by type: cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, etc.)
  • Royal Canadian Mint products (sets, commemoratives, specials)
  • World coins
  • Paper money (Canadian and foreign)
  • Bullion (gold, silver, copper)
  • Tokens and medals

Don’t stress about being perfect. This first pass is just about seeing what you have.

Step 2: Sort, Label, and Make Quick Notes

Once everything is roughly grouped, it’s time to get a bit more detailed.

For coins, you might:

  • Separate by denomination (all quarters together, all loonies together, etc.)
  • Within each denomination, separate by country and/or decade
  • Pull out anything that obviously looks higher grade or special (proofs, colourized, odd shapes)

For paper money:

  • Sort by country and denominatio

    n

  • Separate older series (Bird, Journey, Multicoloured, etc.) from modern notes
  • Watch for nicer-condition notes, replacement notes, or interesting serial numbers

As you do this, keep a simple notepad or spreadsheet handy to jot down:

  • Series or sets you’re clearly building (e.g., “Canadian quarters 1968–present”)
  • Holes you can see (“missing 1973 $1, missing 1999 quarter types”)
  • Items you have multiple duplicates of

These notes will be incredibly helpful when you’re ready to upgrade or buy.

Step 3: Decide What to Keep, Upgrade, or Let Go

A man wearing glasses and a patterned sweater smiles as he uses tweezers to carefully examine and organize silver and copper coins on a black velvet mat.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying—it’s also about making decisions. Ask yourself:

What will I definitely keep?

These might be:

  • Coins and notes with sentimental value
  • Higher-grade pieces or key dates
  • Royal Canadian Mint products and sets you truly enjoy

What should I upgrade?

Look for:

  • Lower-grade coins in sets you care about (maybe it’s time to hunt for nicer examples)
  • Older notes in rough shape that you’d love to see in crisp, clean condition

Make a list like:

  • “Upgrade 1940s nickels”
  • “Look for a nicer Birds $5 note”
  • “Replace scratched $2 proof set”

What can I let go of?

Duplicates and pieces outside your main interests are perfect for:

  • Selling or trading
  • Putting toward something you really want
  • Consigning to auction if they have extra value

Colonial Acres Coins can help here, too, with options to sell coins and paper money or consign better items to auction so you can move your collection forward.

Step 4: Protect Your Collection with Proper Supplies

An array of coin collecting supplies including a blue "World Money" album, currency sleeves, coin flips, a storage box, and an aluminum carrying case.

Once you’ve decided what’s staying, give those keepers the respect they deserve.

For Coins

Conside

r upgrading to:

  • 2×2 cardboard or plastic holders for individual coins
  • Hard capsules for higher-value or favourite pieces
  • Coin albums or folders for series (like Canadian quarters, loonies, or commemorative issues)
  • Storage boxes or trays to keep everything tidy and safe

For Paper Money

Good storage is even more important for notes. Use:

  • Acid-free note sleeves
  • Binder pages made for banknotes
  • Binders or albums specifically designed for paper money

These prevent creases, stains, and fading—damage that can quickly reduce value and eye appeal.

You can find all of these in the Coin Suppliesand Paper Money Supplies sections. A small investment in holders and albums now will save you a lot of frustration later and make your collecti

on a lot more enjoyable to flip through.

Step 5: Record What You Have

A collection is easier to manage when you can actually see it on paper (or screen).

You don’t need anything complicated. Start simple:

  • A spreadsheet with columns like:
    • Country
    • Denomination
    • Year
    • Variety/series
    • Grade (or approximate condition)
    • Notes (e.g., “gift from Grandpa,” “bought at auction,” “needs upgrade”)

Or, if you prefer pen and paper, keep a notebook or binder with pages dedicated to each type (quarters, dollars, $5 banknotes, etc.).

The goal isn’t perfection; it’s visibility. When you know what you have, it’s easier to:

  • Avoid buying duplicates by accident
  • Spot gaps and plan purchases
  • Decide what to sell or upgrade

Step 6: Treat Yourself: Fill Gaps and Upgrade Key Pieces

You’ve done the hard work. Now comes the fun part: improving your collection.

Using your notes and lists from earlier, decide:

  • Which sets you’d like to complete (for example, a full run of Canada’s centennial coins, or a modern series of commemoratives)
  • Which lower-grade coins you’d like to replace with nicer examples
  • Any paper money series you’d like to start or expand

Then, head to Colonial Acres:

  • Browse Canadian decimal and commemoratives to fill gaps in your circulation and RCM sets
  • Explore Royal Canadian Mint products for premium coins and themed sets that match your interests
  • Check out Canadian paper money by series or denomination to upgrade worn notes
  • Visit the bullion section if your spring plan includes adding a little silver or gold to your holdings

And don’t forget to peek at Auctions, Mega Specials, Blowout Specials and Deals you might find exactly what you’re after at a better price.

Step 7: Make Spring Cleaning a Yearly Tradition

Two open deluxe black coin presentation cases, one showing a stacked dark blue velvet tray with large silver coins and the other displaying individual coins in round capsules, one on an open flat.

The best collections don’t just grow—they get curated.

If you turn this process into a simple once-a-year routine, your future self will thank you. Every spring:

  • Pull everything out and quickly re-sort
  • Update your list or spreadsheet
  • Make small decisions about what to keep, upgrade, or sell
  • Refresh supplies where needed (more holders, another album, a new storage box)
  • Set one or two collecting goals for the year

It doesn’t have to be a huge job. Even a few hours once a year keeps your collection organized, protected, and fun to enjoy.
