In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Transatlantic cable, the Royal Canadian Mint took the opportunity to issue a special-edition silver dollar. This Canadian silver dollar celebrates a feat of engineering that is remembered today as a monument to perseverance. The cable provided vital communication between the continents of North America, Europe and the world over. Its eventual implementation managed to connect both sides of the Atlantic Ocean via telegraph just before the invention of the telephone and was an ingenious idea that was way ahead of its time.
The Coin
Designed by the famous marine artist from Canada, Yves Berube, the coin depicts a starboard view of the S.S. Great Eastern. The iron steamship is depicted triumphantly resting in the harbour of Heart’s Content, Newfoundland. The six masts and four funnels of the Great Eastern dominate the upper section of the design on the rear of the coin, while a small fishing boat languishes in the wake of the enormous steamboat.
The design further portrays the fishing village and Trinity Bay with its background of hills and valleys. Many sailors have delighted as they glimpsed the bay and their first sight of land after spending weeks at sea, laying the Transatlantic cable along the North Atlantic seabed. The map element that fills the lower portion of the reverse showcases the cable that made history when it connected Heart’s Content with Valentia Island, Ireland. The map also shows the cable itself. The effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II is included in the obverse, as designed by artist Susanna Blunt and used since 2002 on all Canadian circulation and many commemorative coins as well.
