For many people, part of the fun of coin collecting is getting to celebrate the history that the coins represent. Whether you opt for historical coins or commemorative coins, you can engage with history in a new way. The Royal Canadian Mint released some special coins in 2021 to mark the 100th anniversary of the launch of Bluenose, an iconic Nova Scotian schooner.
About the Bluenose
Bluenose was a gaff rig schooner that was used for fishing and racing. She was built in Nova Scotia in 1921 and, during her racing, earned the nickname the “Queen of the North Atlantic.” At the time, racing fishing schooners was a popular sport. Bluenose earned a reputation as a highly competitive vessel in her class. Her racing career was especially marked by a rivalry with the American schooner Gertrude L. Thebaud. Over the course of five races, both ships earned wins, with Bluenose ultimately coming out on top.
Both Bluenose and her racing record are points of Canadian, especially Nova Scotian, pride. Even the name that was chosen for the ship was an 18th century nickname for Nova Scotians. Since 2021 is the 100-year anniversary of the launch of the Bluenose, it makes sense that the Royal Canadian Mint took the opportunity to celebrate.
The 100th Anniversary Coins
To mark the anniversary, the Mint produced several special 10-cent pieces, among other coins. There are four variations of the Bluenose dime:
- Classic: This is the regular circulation design. It has the normal, single-date layout of a dime. Plus, it features an attractive image of the Bluenose riding the seas on the back..
- Double-Date Classic: This commemorative version of the classic design has a double date on it. In addition to the minting year, it also has 1921 on the reverse to indicate the year of Bluenose’s launch.
- Non-Coloured Special Commemorative: The RCM has also released a more detailed design of Bluenose. On the reverse of this coin, the schooner is listing such that the deck is visible from the side. It gives an impression of Bluenose showing off her legendary racing abilities. This version of the dime also has a double date.
- Coloured Special Commemorative: This version is the same as the non-coloured version with a special addition: blue colouring on the sea. This makes the coin immediately more eye-catching. If you only collect one of the Bluenose dimes, this is the one to get.
Commemorative Set
For people who are interested in collecting coins, this set is a great option. The set includes the double-date classic, non-coloured special commemorative and coloured special commemorative coins. Additionally, it includes a set of all the other classic circulation coins for 2021.
These coins are presented in a cardboard display sleeve that also includes some information on Bluenose and her history. This is the perfect set for anyone who is interested in Canada, history and/or sailing.
Commemorative Coin Rolls
You can also get the double-date classic and both special commemorative coins in a roll set. These coin rolls are great collector’s items but also make a fun gift idea for someone that can be difficult to buy for. These special wrapped rolls are only available within this set or a Mint roll subscription and will not be sold separately by the Mint, making this a unique gift to hold on to for years to come.
