Royal Canadian Mint coin collecting is a fun hobby to enjoy and pass down to future generations. The RCM releases coins to commemorate special events and even memorialize historical figures and heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in September of 2022. A new coin has been issued that simultaneously mourns the late monarch while celebrating her life and connection to Canada. Purchasing this coin is an excellent way to preserve a small bit of history for future generations.
A Look At The $2 Coin of Mourning Design
The Royal Canadian Mint produced a special circulatory $2 coin in honour of the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse side depicts the Queen in profile in the brass center; the simple yet elegant effigy is the classic work of artist Susanna Blunt. The coin also has a black outer ring to symbolize the mournful nature of this currency. The black band bears the inscription, “Elizabeth II – 2022 – D.G Regina.”
The reverse side also sports familiar artwork, this time by Brent Townsend. The center portion shows a polar bear standing on an ice floe, surrounded by water, with mountains in the distance. The polar bear symbolizes Canada and its long history as a member of the Commonwealth. This side also has a black band and inscription: “Canada 2 Dollars,” along with four maple leaves.
The coins are 28 mm in diameter and weigh 6.99 grams each. The interior circle is aluminum bronze plated in three-ply brass, and the black band is steel plated in nickel. The coins are available in rolls of 25.
What Are Queen Elizabeth II’s Most Notable Visits to Canada?
As Canada’s Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II visited the country to celebrate its history and strengthen bonds with Great Britain. Her Majesty’s last Tour of Canada took place in 2010 and was her 22nd official visit in this capacity. The late Duke of Edinburgh accompanied her. Together, they visited several prominent Canadian cities:
- Waterloo
- Halifax
- Winnipeg
- Ottawa
- Toronto
The Royal pair also toured Canada in 1997 to observe the 500th anniversary of an important moment in the country’s history: John Cabot’s arrival in North America. During this trip, the Queen and Duke made stops in Goose Bay, Happy Valley, London and St. John’s.
Queen Elizabeth visited Canada as a member of the Royal Family in the early 1950s, but her first trip as the official Head of State occurred in 1957. Though short at only four days, the Queen opened the first session of Canada’s 23rd Parliament, marking the trip as historically significant.
Why Purchase Limited-Release Coins?
Limited-release Royal Canadian Mint coins are sought after by collectors for their unique design, limited mintage, and high value. These coins are made from high-quality materials and are often a symbol of Canadian heritage and culture. With a limited release, the coin’s rarity adds to its collectibility and potential for appreciation in value over time.
History enthusiasts and fans of the British monarchy can also appreciate this particular coin. If you were unable to attend the national commemorative ceremony, this Coin of Mourning is a way to participate. This coin also makes the perfect gift for those wanting a physical memento of this historic change of power.
