2026 Turtle Island Silver 1 oz Coin: A New RCM Release

July 31, 2026 by Colonial Acres

The Royal Canadian Mint has introduced a meaningful new release that combines Indigenous storytelling, vibrant artwork and fine silver craftsmanship. The 2026 $20 Turtle Island 1 oz. Fine Silver Coin honours an Ojibwe creation story through a beautifully detailed design by Ojibwe artist Patrick Hunter.

Struck in one ounce of 99.99% pure silver and limited to only 5,000 coins worldwide, this new Royal Canadian Mint coin is likely to attract collectors interested in Indigenous art, Canadian history, cultural storytelling and low-mintage silver coins.

Collectors can purchase the 2026 $20 Turtle Island coin from Colonial Acres Coins, along with many other new Royal Canadian Mint releases, Canadian coins, bullion products, paper money and collecting supplies.

The Story Behind Turtle Island

Turtle Island is a name used by many Indigenous Peoples for the lands now commonly known as North America. While different Nations and communities have their own teachings and versions of the story, this coin presents artist Patrick Hunter’s visual interpretation of an Ojibwe creation story.

In this telling, a great flood covers the land, leaving the animals searching for a new place to live. They gather on the back of a giant turtle and realize they need soil from beneath the deep water to begin rebuilding the world.

Several animals attempt the difficult journey but are unable to reach the bottom. Finally, the muskrat dives beneath the surface. Although the small animal sacrifices its life, it returns with soil held in its paw. That soil is placed on the turtle’s back, where it begins to expand and create a new home for the animals.

It is a powerful story about courage, renewal and the idea that even the smallest individual can make an important difference.

A Colourful Design Filled With Meaning

The reverse of the Turtle Island coin brings this creation story to life through Patrick Hunter’s distinctive interpretation of the Woodland art style.

A Canadian silver collector coin featuring an Indigenous illustration of a turtle carrying an island of flowers and a tree on its backSeveral important design elements appear across the coin:

              • The muskrat beneath the water represents courage, determination and sacrifice.
              • The giant turtle supports the newly created land on its back.
              • Flowers and trees show the growth of a flourishing new world.
              • The Tree of Life represents harmony and the connection shared by all living things.
              • The sun and its rays symbolize hope and the promise of a new beginning.
              • Swirling water and engraved details add movement, texture and depth to the scene.

Selective colour makes the natural elements stand out against the coin’s reflective proof finish. Beneath the colour, finely engraved details add additional layers to the design and encourage collectors to examine the artwork more closely.

The obverse features the Canadian effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, created by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Patrick Hunter’s First Royal Canadian Mint Collaboration

The 2026 Turtle Island coin marks the Royal Canadian Mint’s first artistic collaboration with Patrick Hunter, an Ojibwe painter and graphic designer originally from Red Lake, Ontario.

Hunter’s work draws inspiration from nature, spirituality and the visual traditions of Woodland art. On this coin, his flowing lines, bold forms and vibrant colours transform a one-ounce silver surface into a lasting piece of Indigenous storytelling.

That first-time collaboration adds another interesting detail for collectors. Coins featuring the debut work of an artist may hold special appeal within a broader Royal Canadian Mint or Indigenous art coin collection.
