The Royal Canadian Mint has produced many coins of Canada to date that commemorate important historical milestones and celebrate countless Canadian symbols. The “Call of the Wild” series is one such series of gold coins launched in 2014 that features designs dedicated to the expansive and untamed wilderness of Canada. With one coin launched annually, each one is composed of .99999 fine gold, making them the purest gold bullion available in the world. 2018 will see the release of the Golden Eagle Gold Coin, but let’s take a closer look at the previous specimens in the series:
The Howling Wolf
This 1 oz. coin was launched in 2014 as the inaugural coin for the series, celebrating one of the most iconic wilderness creatures of Canada. The design of the coin depicts a wolf howling and filling the fields with rippling sound waves. Immense and majestic in every way, the species of canine can see eye-to-eye with a 6’ man when outstretched and hunts in packs of three to seven.
The Roaring Cougar
Depicting the regal beast best known for strength, speed and stealthy stalking of its prey, this coin was released in 2015. Typically a lone creature, the cougar is capable of overtaking its prey quickly and effortlessly. The animal is fierce and alert on the coin; shown by cascading sound waves, it emits a piercing roar. The coin comes in a plastic card designed to prevent environmental damage and preserve its quality.
The Roaring Grizzly
This 1 oz. gold coin made its debut at the 2016 World Money Fair in Berlin. The second largest mammal in North America, the grizzly bear is second only to the polar bear. Though it is not an aggressive animal, a bear has incredible speed and power that it uses to hunt for its prey. Eight lines of sound waves illustrate the bear releasing a powerful roar on the coin.
The Bugling Elk
The fourth design to be released in the Call of the Wild Series is the 1 oz. Bugling Elk Gold Coin. The great elk is one of the largest mammals in North America and one of the largest members of the deer family. Depicted with its face upturned and bugling with its head back, its antlers are cast back over its neck. Due to their large seasonal migrations, elk are unique among North American mammals.
The Golden Eagle
This 1 oz. gold coin features one of the most evolved and efficient predators in all of Canada. Found in the prairies and mountains, these beautiful and fierce birds are protected as an endangered species and are easily spotted by the gleaming gold feathers. Made from 99.999% pure gold, this 2018 Call of the Wild Series coin arrives in a credit card-sized assay to keep it safe and secure from environmental damage.
