2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canada. The nation has been in existence for 150 years this year and wants to celebrate. There are many events on the nation’s schedule and to commemorate the occasion, the Royal Canadian Mint has created several unique coins and sets that show off the best of Canada. One new coin will launch just in time for the Canada 150 anniversary and will make a wonderful addition to any coin collection. This June, the $20 Fine Silver Coin Canada’s Coasts Series: the Pacific Coast, will be available, showcasing a fine silver piece with beautiful yellow-gold colouring. This will be the first coin of the Canada’s Coasts Series, and sure to be a big hit.
The Coasts Series
With this new series, the coasts of Canada will be highlighted. Coin collectors will be able to purchase individual coins that represent the varying shores of the nation. With the first coin, the Pacific coast is highlighted with an image taking a unique patriotic twist. The reverse image of the coin was designed by Curtis Atwater and features an orca whale swimming in front of the Pacific coastline, which includes the mountain landscape. The dorsal fin of the orca can be seen and the tallest mountain peak highlighted and pointing towards a sunset.
However, the sunset is not your typical sun. A maple leaf has replaced the sun and is shining bright in yellow and orange hues. The maple leaf sun is also reflected in the waters below the mountains. Detailed engraving was used to make the image stand out on this new coin.
Coin Details
The new $20 coin will be released on June 6th 2017, with only 7,500 coins minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. The weight of each coin comes in at 31.39 grams with 38 mm in diameter in size. The coin has a proof finish with a serrated edge and will come packaged in a maroon clamshell with a black beauty box. With such a low mintage, this coin is sure to be sought after by collectors.
