Combining the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic, Canada is a country with the longest coastline in the world. In order to celebrate such beauty, the Royal Canadian Mint has come up with a lovely set in appreciation of these coasts and the creatures that inhabit them. The 3 coin set consists of square-shaped pieces with different designs and stories about Canadian coasts. All three coins are made out of silver and display some finely-engraved gold-plated images. Read on if you’re interested to know more about the design details for each of the three coins:
Pacific Sunset
Just as the name of the first coin suggests, in the middle of it there’s a setting sun engraved in gold. It is the centre image around which the bear, orca and the sailboat are situated. The sun represents the beautiful view in time of sunsets on the Pacific Ocean. Gold was chosen for the purpose of giving warmth and light that radiates the surrounding figures. The Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear, is also engraved in gold for the effect of warmth coming from the sun. This animal is known to inhabit British Columbia’s coastlines, and that is how it came to be chosen for this coin set. Another figure is the orca, a toothed whale that feeds on fish, marine mammals, and other animals. This silver image represents the wonders of the sea and our bond with the vast ocean. The last figure that found its place on the coin is a sailboat. It was chosen because it symbolically represents all the fishing or sailing that happens along the coast of the Pacific.
True North
The centre place of the second coin is occupied by the image of a silver compass. It was chosen to represent all the exploration and adventures that took place in the North of Canada. Another image is that of inukshuk, a human-made stone with spiritual importance to the Inuit. The caribou was chosen because of its importance as a food source for the early settlers and Natives. The stunning gold plating really shines on the coin and the detailed engraving makes the caribou stand out.
Atlantic Coves
The third coin in the set features lighthouses on the rocky eastern coasts that represent the importance of the light to the seafarers. There are four on each side and all are gold-plated with the silver rock that stands for the shore. The humpback whale also finds its place on the square coin and represents all marine life. It also symbolises the famous whale-watching sites as a well-known tourist attraction. Another animal situated in all four corners on the coin is the lobster. It is very famous among fisherman and stands for the economic powerhouse. All three pieces have the same golden rim and the obverse with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
