The Royal Canadian Mint has once again released a special celebration coin. This is one of the most remarkable Canadian silver coins on the market. This five-ounce coin is dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of Newfoundland joining Canada. Only one thousand pieces were minted so do not miss your chance to check out this amazing coin.
5 oz. Pure Silver Coin
This special edition five-ounce coin dedicated to Newfoundland joining Canada in 1949 can be a great addition to your collection. The coin weighs 157.6 grams and has a diameter of 65.25 millimetres, which makes it one of the largest Canadian silver coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. To give you an idea, this is almost triple the size of regular Loonie.
The design of the coin is a tribute to John Cabot and the ship historians believe he was captaining when he discovered Newfoundland. Underneath the depiction of the ship, the engraver Thomas Shingles made an inscription reading “May the New-Found-Land Flourish” written in Latin. Mr. Shingles put in a lot of work in this design as he hand-crafted the whole picture, which is not surprising as he was the Master Engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint between 1943 and 1965.
On the other side of the coin, collectors will see T. H. Paget’s depiction of King George VI, which is one of the most famous obverse designs for Canadian silver coins. Overall the coin features two amazing depictions of the Royal Canadian Mint’s capabilities and professional craftsmanship.
The fact that only one thousand pieces were minted makes this coin even more special. This is a limited number collectible, so in addition to its’ historical significance, it will also be a very valuable acquisition.
The History of Newfoundland and Labrador
Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent announced the long-awaited new provincial status of Newfoundland on April 1, 1949, and their coat of arms was officially added to a plaque outside of the parliament building representing its new designation.
While Newfoundland had been an independent territory for many years, the cooperation between the province and the Canadian forces during World War One brought the two nations together. Therefore, after the war ended and Newfoundland had to choose whether to side with England or Canada, it started negotiating with the latter to come up with an acceptable coalition deal.
Ever since then, Newfoundland has been a touristic landmark of the country and one of the most cherished provinces.
The coin dedicated to this historic event will be of great interest to all Newfoundlanders and everyone with a deep interest in Canadian history. The fact that the design touches upon the first-ever discovery of the territory is an homage to Newfoundland and Labrador history, which is very rich and intriguing.
