Underneath the depiction of the ship, the engraver Thomas Shingles made an inscription reading “May the New-Found-Land Flourish” written in Latin. Mr. Shingles put in a lot of work in this design as he hand-crafted the whole picture, which is not surprising as he was the Master Engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint between 1943 and 1965.
