Brave Canadian soldiers sacrificed all they had on the battlefields so that Canada and the world can experience freedom today. It is only fitting that these heroes and their sacrifices be acknowledged and lauded by future generations. They deserve to remain permanently etched in the memory of mankind forever. This is the primary motivation behind Royal Canadian Mint’s production of a set of Canadian silver coins commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
A Remarkable Moment in History
D-Day is a very significant moment in the history of the world as it heralded the end of the second world war (1944). D-Day commenced on June 6, 1944 with the battle of Normandy which commenced with the storming of Juno beach by 15000 allied troops, and it is on that date that catastrophic world war two ended with the defeat of the Axis powers in the battle of Normandy. Canada’s brave soldiers (14000 of them) joined forces with others from around the world to ensure that the allied forces were victorious in that decisive battle. Canada also provided air support in the form of 15 fighter and fighter-bomber squadrons as well as 110 ships and 10,000 sailors.
The Package
The souvenir is a silver dollar proof set comprising seven magnificent pieces dedicated to recognizing and remembering the bravery of standing in the gap for humanity in a time of peril. The package has a representation of each Canadian denomination.

The image engraved on the reverse depicts a concerned young soldier facing battle for the first time, looking slightly over his shoulder while aiming ahead. On his shoulder is the reassuring hand of another soldier offering support in this critical time. This reflects the brotherhood demonstrated by allied forces in the war. You’ll certainly notice the striking contrast created by the gold coloured wedding ring on the reassuring hand and the black and white image on the coin. The ring is symbolic as it represents the personal sacrifices made by soldiers as well as their families and friends. In the backdrop, other soldiers march ahead. The image itself is steeped in history as it is an actual replica of a still image taken from a film covering the arrival of the North Shore Regiment on Juno Beach during the war.
The years 1944 and 2019 stand on the sides of the image representing the year the coin was produced as well as the year of the significant battle.
