Lovers of nature rejoice! Royal Canadian Mint has released a coin set that can truly be described as an ode to the awesomeness of Nature. This set of three 99.99 percent pure silver coins is designed to reflect three magnificent natural phenomena that occur in Canada’s sky.
Canadian Natural Wonders Captured on Coins
The coins’ magnificent artistry directs your attention to the wonder that is the Canadian sky. These wonders include; the starry night sky devoid of clouds and the fire rainbow. The latter is neither a rainbow nor fire despite its suggestive name. In fact, fire rainbows are circumhorizontal arcs created by the interaction of the sun’s rays with ice crystals in the clouds.
In order to produce these magnificent shows, the sun needs to be more than 58 degrees above the horizon. As the rays shine down through the cirrus clouds in the sky (which happens when they are aligned) the light is refracted by the ice crystal plates in the clouds. The result is the beautiful show of colours that Canadians admire so much.
Details of the Set
For each coin in the set, the images on the ground are engraved in silver while the sky is adorned in colour. The first coin begins with a view on the ground with a cottage-like building to the side and a small lake in front of it. A mountain range is in the distance and above the horizon, the sky boasts a light cloudy sky with the purple hue of the fire rainbow gently spreading its coating across the clouds. This coin is named “ Fire Rainbow “ and was designed by Tony Bianco.
Another version of the fire rainbow is represented on a second coin, revealing the diversity of this beautiful phenomenon. This coin design offers the view of a lake with a boat sitting on its shore. At the far side, the lake is bordered by a stretch of mountains which create a horizon. At this horizon, the spectacular beauty of a sky with a fire rainbow begins. The sun appears to be making its final descent and its orange-hued glow is seen glazing the horizon. The sky is deep blue with speckles of stars and at the top of the image the fire rainbow, showcasing an impressive combination of green and purple colours. This coin is named “ Steve “.
The third coin delivers a vision of a street from the perspective of an individual standing in the middle of the street and looking outward. Both sides of the street have buildings that extend up towards the night’s sky. The highest building is in the distance ahead and resembles a tower. Above the buildings, providing the perfect backdrop is a deep blue sky with a plethora of stars. This coin is named “ Light Pillars ”.
The reverse of all three coins reflect the Susanna Blunt designed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. With this coin set, the fire rainbow phenomenon and the Canadian night sky are beautifully captured and placed in the palm of your hands.
