Following the successful release of the Royal Canadian Mint’s Haunted Canada coins issued between 2014 and 2016, the Mint has designed a new coin. The Spooky Canada: HI Ottawa Jail Hostel coin is the ideal spooky coin that you can add to your collection. The coin depicts a renowned ghost story from the HI Ottawa Jail Hostel, where to this very day a ghost is said to haunt. Like the previous coins released in the Haunted Canada series, this lenticular coin has a spooky secret, and in order to see it, you must tilt it side to side to see the two different images. The first photo is of a young woman stood outside of the jailhouse, yet when the coin is tilted, an eerie ghost suddenly appears. Royal Canadian Mint coins are a fantastic addition to any great coin collection, and this is no exception, don’t miss out on a piece of Canada’s haunted history.
The Hauntings of Ottawa
The early beginnings of this haunted story starts with the building of the Ottawa jail back in 1862, originally named Carleton County Gaol, which housed up to 150 prisoners at one time. The infamy started when Patrick Whelan, who was hanged for the assassination of Canadian politician and poet Thomas D’Arcy McGee in 1868, is said to still haunt the prison to this day. The jail was closed in 1972 after many reports of inhumane conditions and after being shuttered for a few months, the building was reopened as a hostel, which is when the unexplained events began. Guests who were staying in the building began seeing unnatural sightings and hearing disturbing noises. It was claimed that it was the ghost of Whelan who started appearing at the foot of guests’ beds or in the cell that he was housed in for death row. To this day guests swear they can hear Whelan shuffling around the building reciting the Lord’s prayer, just as he did before he was hung. It’s considered to be one of Canada’s most haunted buildings.
Royal Canadian Mint’s Haunted Coin Collection
Canada is a country steeped in storytelling, especially stories with ghosts and hauntings. Royal Canadian Mint paid homage to some of these legendary tales by designing spooky coins that portrayed some of the most famous and important. Starting off with the ghost bride of Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in 2014 with a limited Mintage of just limited 15,000. The 2015 haunting story of the headless brakeman, which was offered as a more affordable way to introduce young people to coin collection. And the 2016 coin representing the creepy Newfoundland and Labrador’s Bell Island sightings, a place said to be the most haunted place in North America.
