The Hauntings of Ottawa
The early beginnings of this haunted story starts with the building of the Ottawa jail back in 1862, originally named Carleton County Gaol,which housed up to 150 prisoners at one time. The infamy started when Patrick Whelan, who was hanged for the assassination of Canadian politician and poet Thomas D’Arcy McGee in 1868, is said to still haunt the prison to this day. The jail was closed in 1972 after many reports of inhumane conditions and after being shuttered for a few months, the building was reopened as a hostel, which is when the unexplained events began. Guests who were staying in the building began seeing unnatural sightings and hearing disturbing noises. It was claimed that it was the ghost of Whelan who started appearing at the foot of guests’ beds or in the cell that he was housed in for death row. To this day guests swear they can hear Whelan shuffling around the building reciting the Lord’s prayer, just as he did before he was hung. It’s considered to be one of Canada’s most haunted buildings.
