The beauty of the Canadian wild is celebrated in this 2020 three-coin set from the Royal Canadian Mint. There is much to highlight about the second-largest country in the world with the longest coastline, and artist Terry Bianco does it beautifully in the artwork on the reverse of these coins. GPS coordinates are included on each coin depicting spots on the 152,100 miles of Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic coasts. Placed together, the reverse of the coins creates a map connecting the shores of Canada overlaid with a beautiful, red-accented maple leaf, while the obverse features Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Pacific Coin
The westernmost points on the Canadian coastline are depicted in this Pacific-themed coin. The delicate ecosystem on the western shores of Canada boasts North America’s most diverse colonies of plants and wildlife. Wolves, bears, dolphins and whales coexist with over 120 species of birds here, all dependent on the bounty of the North Pacific waters.
A Kermode bear is shown fishing for the jumping salmon from the rocky shoreline in the left foreground. Surrounding the bear is the latitude and longitude of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago separated from the mainland by the Hecate Strait. On the right-hand background is the Pacific coastline overlaid with a portion of an iconic red maple leaf in the upper right that adds the perfect balance to the GPS coordinates on the left.
The Arctic Coin
On the Arctic-themed coin, the upper left portrays a narwhal breaking through the waters of the Arctic ocean with the rugged terrain of the coast in the background. A narwhal also called a narwhale, is a medium-sized whale with a long tusk on the front common to the waters around Canada, Greenland and Russia. The narwhal along with the beluga whale are the only two remaining members of the Monodontidae family.
Bordering the narwhal on the left are the coordinates of Grise Fiord, Nunavut. It is a tight-knit, isolated community near the Northernmost point of Canada that never thaws, even when the sun shines 24 hours per day. The center of the coin highlights the Arctic coastline, while the bottom of the coin features the upper left-hand portion of the red maple leaf.
The Atlantic Coin
On the Atlantic-themed coin, the wildlife of the far eastern region of Canada is represented by the puffin. This too-cute-to-be-real black and white fisherman has a multi-colored bill and wings that double as powerful flippers underwater. These inhabitants of the North Atlantic live to around 30 years old. An example to modern families everywhere, both the male and female share the duty of incubating the eggs until the pufflings hatch.
Canada’s Atlantic coastline takes up the center of the coin while the remaining portion of the red maple leaf covers the left-hand side. The GPS coordinates of Cape Spear, N.L., indicate the easternmost point of the coastline. Cape Spear is known to many for its lighthouse, designated as a national historic site. The lighthouse sits with all of North America behind it and nothing but water until the Ireland coastline in front of it.
