The Royal Canadian Mint has released the first coin in the new Floral Emblems of Canada set. This 13-coin series will present the floral emblem of each of Canada’s provinces and territories. The first coin to be released in this handsome collection is the blue flag iris for Quebec.
Coin Features
The Quebec floral emblem coin has Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side and a colored image of the iconic blue flag iris on the reverse. Set in a pure silver coin with a proof finish, the iris is so majestic and colorful that it sets this piece apart from other minted coins. An intricate flower pattern creates a lovely silver border around the flower. The obvious focus on this artistic beauty creates an effect more like fine jewelry than a coin.
Pendant Necklace
It is no coincidence that the coin that looks like vintage jewelry. Lisa Thomson-Khan, the designing artist, created it to be reminiscent of the celebrated Victorian era. In keeping with Thomson-Khan’s vision, the coin can be fit inside a pendant necklace that is sold separately. With this necklace you or your loved one can proudly wear your coin. As new coins in this series are released, they can also fit interchangeably inside the necklace, allowing you to share your stunning collection with friends.
Displaying your coin in such an eye-grabbing way also gives you a fun opportunity to talk with people you meet about your passion for coins. As those around you notice your distinctive jewelry and comment on it, you have the chance to discuss your collection and share with them more about your favourite pieces. You may even have the happy experience of the instant connection that occurs when another collector recognizes your coin and approaches you to discuss your common interest.
Packaging and Display
Your coin will ship in a luxurious clamshell box. A display case for the complete Floral Emblems of Canada set is also available so you can appropriately present the coins together as the rest of the set is released.
About Quebec’s Provincial Flower
The original provincial flower was the Madonna lily, which looks like the fleur-de-lis on Quebec’s flag. However, the Madonna lily is not native to Quebec and a movement to choose a flower that better represents the province resulted in naming the blue flag iris as the floral emblem in 1999. Iris versicolor, more commonly called the blue flag iris, was aptly chosen because it also resembles the fleur-de-lis but is a native wildflower found in the eastern marshes of Canada.
The iris has a rich history, admired by cultures and nations across the world. Its name comes from the Greek goddess Iris, who was said to have come as a rainbow to be a link between earth and heaven. Since those early days, irises have been cultivated and used in perfumes and ancient medicines. The delicate flower is used to represent faith, hope, and wisdom. What better messages for Quebec to embrace in their provincial flower?
