Nearly every year, the Royal Canadian Mint releases some special, commemorative coins that reflect something unique and significant about Canada. Some of these have marked major anniversaries, and others have celebrated the culture. In 2020, one of these coins features the white trillium, a symbol of Ontario.
The White Trillium of Ontario
The white trillium is the official flower of Ontario and was adopted in 1937. Its blossom has three large, white petals with golden-yellow stamen in the center. The flower famously blossoms early, heralding the arrival of spring. Additionally, the sun-loving flowers point toward the sun throughout the day as it moves across the sky. There is a myth in Ontario that the flowers are illegal to pick. Although this is untrue in most cases, they are quite fragile and slow-growing. So, the locals show a lot of respect for the white trillium.
A movement arose during World War I to adopt an official flower that could be planted on servicemen’s graves overseas. In response, the government of Ontario convened a special committee of horticulturalists. It recommended the white trillium due to its prevalence in the area and its beauty. With the passage of the Floral Emblem Act, it was officially adopted as a symbol of the province.
The Royal Canadian Mint’s Floral Emblems of Canada
The floral emblems of Canada series is a 13-coin subscription set that showcases the flowers of all of Canada’s provinces. These are beautiful, commemorative coins that celebrate both Canada’s provinces and her natural wonders.
Like other commemorative series produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, this one has a limited mintage and is intended for collection and display. As Canada’s most populous province and one of the first in the Confederation, Ontario’s coin is the first in the series.
As the series continues, the RCM will release a new coin each month. The release order is based on the date that each province entered the Confederation, followed by the three territories. They are available for individual purchase or as a subscription set. The latter option includes a graphic beauty box which will hold the coins together.
The White Trillium Coin
Collectors will be amazed by the beautiful design on the reverse of this coin. Designed by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan, it features a stylized, engraved floral pattern around an outer ring with an incredible, colorful painting of the white trillium in the center. On the obverse is the traditional RCM portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
The coin is 99.99% pure silver and weighs 7.96 grams. It is 27 millimeters in diameter and carries a face value of three dollars. Of course, the true value of this limited-mintage coin is significantly higher. Collectors can choose to purchase a special pendant necklace that fits the coin so that it can be worn as a necklace. The reverse proof finish helps give the coin the look of antique jewelry.
This is a perfect addition to a Canada-themed collection or as a way to celebrate Ontario. It also makes an excellent gift, especially for someone who loves flowers and/or jewelry.
