As temperatures and available sunlight drop, it’s easy to find yourself dealing with the winter doldrums. Even if you’re not dealing with an officially diagnosed case of Seasonal Affective Disorder, the winter blues can make it difficult to get out of bed and carry on your daily routine. Luckily, for those dealing with these feelings, there are some tried and true methods to help regain your energy and keep you rocking and rolling until warm weather and sunshine arrive once again.

Common Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

If you’re struggling with feeling down during the winter months, make sure to try some of these common ways that are proven to improve your mood:

  • Eat healthy foods including lots of fruits and vegetables. Make sure to avoid sugary snacks like candy and processed foods packed with carbohydrates.
  • Find time to bask in the sun whenever possible. Keep your blinds open and trim tree branches to make sure the sunshine can reach you wherever you are. If you lack direct access to sunlight, consider purchasing a sunlight simulator.
  • Get your blood pumping with exercise. Even a moderately paced walk that lasts at least 30 minutes can help improve mental health.
  • Volunteering is an excellent way to give back to your community and help add meaning to your life.

Start a New Hobby Like Coin Collecting

Collecting coins can help keep your mind busy as you learn about the history behind your new hobby. Coins also serve as forms of art, with intricate designs and decorations that you won’t find in other mediums. As you look for new additions to your collection, you’ll find yourself spending more time out of your house and engaging in your new hobby.

The Fun of the Hunt

For those new to collecting coins, it can be surprising just how fun it is to grow your collection. This hobby stimulates your brain as you begin to research and study which coins you aim to purchase. If you enjoy culture, history, or politics, you’ll find that coin collecting is a natural extension.

As you get deeper and deeper into your research, you’ll begin to focus on specific coins to add to your mass of coins. You’ll start going to conventions, resale shops, and coin stores to hunt down your latest target. Collecting coins is an engaging hobby and one that can take you to places you’d never expect to visit.

Collecting as an Investment

Some people view their accumulation of coins as investments, too. This doesn’t take away the joy in researching, identifying, and discovering the latest addition to your collection. In fact, you may find that viewing your coins as an investment can help point you in all sorts of new directions with your hobby.

Tips To Get You Started

It can be overwhelming to start any hobby, especially one with such a rich history as coin collecting. To make it easier, it helps to work with some basic tips:

  • Coin collectors have their own language. It helps to know some key terms, such as the anatomy of the coin, to help you with your search.
  • You don’t need a specific focus when you start. It’s perfectly fine to begin your collection with coins of unique shape or design or coins that commemorate your other hobbies.
  • You should avoid handling any coins with bare hands, as the oils in your skin can damage the coin’s finish and value. You should also avoid latex or plastic gloves and instead use ones made from cotton.
  • You’ll need some tools to get started, such as a magnifying glass, a basic inventory system, and a reference book or two.
