Fashion trends from the 1970s are coming back into vogue. With a unique mix of vibrant colours and natural materials, this style has something for everyone. Fans of estate jewellery will be especially pleased to hear that 1970s accessories are also hitting the mainstream fashion scene.

What designs can we expect to see as the trend grows? Here are some of the most iconic pieces reemerging among vintage enthusiasts.

Gold Estate Jewellery

Yellow gold is a classic material, and there was plenty of it in the 1970s. From an economic standpoint, gold experienced rapid changes in value over the decade, ending with a huge price spike as the 1970s came to an end. This high demand made gold even more sought after as individuals used it in jewellery to flaunt their socioeconomic status.

This precious metal was used to make a variety of pieces:

  • Bangle bracelets
  • Rings
  • Earrings

One of the most common styles that persist to this day is large gold hoops.

Natural Colours

The hippie movement took off in the 1960s and ended in the early 1970s, but counterculture fashion continued throughout the decade. Bohemian, a style still popular today, is all about flowing lines and earthy colours. Browns, greens, creams and reds were common in boho colour palettes.

Interestingly, this style didn’t originate with the hippie movement but was adopted as a way to reject societal norms. The original bohemians date back to the 18th century and were largely artists bucking tradition. The 1970s counterculture embraced this ideology by opening fashion beyond the strictly Western, white patterns that had dominated American society.

As a result, we see diversity among 1970s vintage jewellery, including African, Asian, and Indigenous influences. For example, turquoise jewellery was a mainstay, drawing heavily from traditional designs of Southwestern Native American tribes. Hawaiian puka shells also significantly impacted 1970s jewellery, showcasing the decade’s fascination with other cultures and natural materials.

Statement Pieces

While the counterculture movement emphasizes being laid back and “groovy,” the jewellery was anything but. Statement pieces were all the rage, and massive pendants bearing enormous gems were a common sight. Necklaces were a popular choice, but you could also find chunky accessories like rings, bracelets and even earrings.

Another impressive trend that both complemented and contrasted with the flowy fabrics of the 1970s was necklace layering. People of all genders wore several necklaces of varying lengths, highlighting necklines and creating intriguing textures. Gold chains were a favourite layering option, with statement pieces chosen to stand out against the yellow metal.

Geometric Designs

Geometric designs are another 1970s fashion feature that shows up in the modern age. These dynamic patterns were everywhere:

  • Fabrics
  • Wallpaper
  • Carpet

Of course, they also made their mark on jewellery, showing up in the statement pieces we mentioned above. With sharp angles and hefty weights, these designs made a beautiful contrast to the loose, airy shirts and dresses that characterized the decade.

Colour Blocking

While boho was a popular trend, it wasn’t the only one. On the opposite end of the spectrum were bold prints and colours that individuals embraced to stand out. One way to do so was colour blocking, a design technique that uses hues opposite on the colour wheel. Colour blocking showed up within individual jewellery pieces and as the combined effect of statement pieces and outfits.

Are you looking for vintage jewellery to enhance your wardrobe? Colonial Acres Coins has a wide selection of 1970s pieces that are sure to turn heads. Whether you’re a fan of big, gold bangles or prefer subdued rings with natural stones, there’s something for everyone. To see what’s available, visit us online, or call if you have any questions.
