As the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing is upon us, now is the perfect time to check out some of the amazing coins that celebrate our favourite winter activities. It is no secret that Canadians love winter sports, so it is likely no surprise that the Royal Canadian Mint often mints coins representing some of these activities. 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada
In 2010, Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics. This was a time of great pride for many Canadians. The RCM minted some coins to celebrate this event. In particular, there was a series of $25 coins representing many of the events during the games.

Learning To Skate
Of course, not all winter activities are as competitive as the Winter Olympics. In fact, for most people, winter recreation is more about relaxation, fun and family. In 2014, the RCM released a $10 silver coin with a colourful depiction of a man teaching a child to skate. This is a familiar and cherished experience for many Canadians.
Ice Dance
In a similar vein, this 2015 $20 silver coin shows a family out on the ice. The two adults and a young girl are ice dancing while the young boy plays with his hockey stick. There are also two dogs out on the ice having fun with the family. This coin beautifully captures the importance of skating in Canada. It is both a fun activity and a way for families and communities to bond.
Sledding and Tobogganing
Many families prefer to stick to the snow rather than the ice. This 2016 $10 Winter Fun silver coin is a great example of the fun that a little powder can offer. It shows two adults, two children and a dog enjoying a toboggan ride together. For many families, the first good snow of the year (and often every subsequent snowfall) is a perfect excuse to enjoy the thrill of speeding down a hill on a sled.
The Joy of Winter
Continuing the theme of Canadian families enjoying the winter, this 2015 $10 Winter Scene coin captures a slightly sillier scene. In the reverse design, one child pulls along another in a sled in the foreground. However, behind them is another sledder who has lost control and sent the sled flying. Winter activities are often accompanied by snowy wipeouts and this coin captures that perfectly.
