The 2023 Mosaic of Canada Icons 6-coin set is an extraordinary chance to lay hands on your favourite classic Canadian coin designs with a unique twist. The Royal Canadian Mint has decided to dedicate its efforts to honour the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022) and will not be issuing any standard 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins with her portrait, instead offering a limited collector’s edition for each of the six Canadian coin denominations.

But wait, there’s more! This special Collector’s Edition is the ultimate tribute to our country’s beloved symbols, official or not. The 50-cent piece has been modified to represent Canadian icons. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting out, this set is perfect for celebrating your love of Canada. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary addition to your coin collection.

Continue reading to discover more about the different symbols that are special and unique to Canada.

Mosaic of Canadian Icons Displayed on the 50-Cent Coin

The 50-cent piece is undoubtedly the highlight of this set. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the dates of her reign. The reverse, traditionally the coat of arms, is replaced by a spectacular mosaic of red and white coloured symbols highlighting the best of Canada. Alisha Giroux, the artist, combined these elements into a pattern that showcases the Canadian maple leaf.

Learn more about these Canadian symbols incorporated into the stunning coin design.

THE POLAR BEARThe Polar Bear

It’s estimated that Canada is home to two-thirds of the population of polar bears, the largest bear in the world. Polar bears are only found along the Arctic coastlines in the northern hemisphere. This majestic animal represents strength and endurance as they raise their young and survive in a harsh climate.

THE HOCKEY SKATEThe Hockey Skate

Hockey is more than a national sport, it’s a way of life. The hockey skate is a profound symbol for Canadians, embodying their national pride and love for the sport. It signifies not only their passion for ice hockey but also represents the country’s cultural identity and historic connection to winter sports.

CANOE WITH OARSCanoe With Oars

Even in the modern age, the canoe remains a dependable means of transport. For Indigenous Peoples, it’s more than just a vessel – it’s a symbol of their identity, embodying community and familial bonds. During the sun-soaked days of summer, canoeing provides Canadians with a unique opportunity to explore the breathtaking beauty of nature via the country’s serene lakes.

THE BEAVERThe Beaver

The beaver is an iconic symbol of Canada, featured on the 5-cent coin. It shares the spotlight on this 50-cent coin. In 1975, the beaver became an official symbol of Canada, under royal assent, but they’ve held special status in Canada for over 300 years. Beavers are native to Canada and are considered the largest rodent in North America.

THE TOQUEThe Toque

This knitted cap gets its name from the French “tuque,” as it probably originated with French or Métis fur traders. It’s become representative of Canadian winter sportswear, whether the wearer is snow-shoeing, tobogganing, curling or just playing outside in the snow.

THE MOOSEThe Moose

Moose are endemic to Canada and are considered another iconic symbol of the country. As the largest member of the deer family, they can be found almost everywhere in Canada, except Vancouver Island and the Arctic. Moose are some of the largest mammals in Canada, but their habitats are declining, which hurts their population.

CURLING STONECurling Stone

Curling holds a special place in the hearts of Canadians, serving as a cherished pastime and an integral part of their cultural heritage. Curling is not unique to Canada, but it is one of the most popular sports in the country. Introduced by Scottish immigrants in the early 1800s, it continues to embody the spirit of sportsmanship and strategic play for Canadians from coast to coast.

THE SNOWY OWLThe Snowy Owl

The snowy owl, all decked out in its fancy white feathers, is pretty important to us Canadians. It’s even the official bird of Quebec! People see it as a sign of wisdom and toughing it out, kind of like how we respect nature and handle our chilly winters with grit.
