Deciding which coins you want to collect
Coin collecting as a hobby can be very rewarding, especially when you come across a particular coin for your collection that you have been trying to find for ages. Before you begin to collect, learn about the various types of coins to find, and which ones interest you the most, such as historical and quality coins. Read books on collecting coins, how to grade, the value of a coin, and how to take care of them. The more you learn, the more specialized you will become, and the less likely that you will be ripped off when buying. After all, you want your hobby of collecting coins to be fun and enjoyable.
Numismatics
Do you know the official name for coin collecting? Well, it is Numismatics, and a coin collector is referred to as a Numismatist. Numismatics not only refers to coins, it also refers to the collection and study of paper currency and tokens. Coin collecting dates way back in time, to ancient kings and queens, hence being called “The Hobby of Kings.” It is also interesting to note that the most expensive coin ever sold was a 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar, it sold for $10,016,875!
The different types of coin collections
Mint Marks – collecting a coin of the same year with different mint marks is a good and interesting way to start a collection. Or collecting coins from a specific country all dated the same year, or one type of coin of a certain past date of every year until now, is called Year Collections. Lovers of history like to collect coins from a certain time period of historical significance. This type of collecting is referred to as Time Period Collection.
Series and Type set is a coin collection for a given period such as Roosevelt Dimes. If you collect these dimes, you need to collect not only the years but also the different mint marks. Whereas a Type set is a collection of coins for each major design of a given denomination, such as all types of nickels like Buffalo Nickel, Liberty Head Nickel, or Jefferson Nickel.
