Proper caring is necessary for your Coin Collection
Proper storing and caring for your coin collection is important to avoid depreciating the value. Seeing a coin collection that is well-presented is a most impressive sight. Fine coins require the same care and storage as precious jewels do, so you must handle and store them in the correct way. Coins should be encased in acid-free paper sleeves or envelopes, presented in a good-looking album, or arranged in felt-lined drawers. However, folders are not suitable for storing valuable coins, but you can use small PVC-free plastic bags. These are also suitable for when you want to sell Royal Mint coins.
Damaging coins
You may not be aware that skin oils and dirt can damage a coin with time and the way the coin is handled is important. Wear cotton gloves when you pick up a coin, holding it by the edges over a cloth or pad as protection in case it should inadvertently fall. Avoid touching the coin content or cleaning it as even wiping coins with a soft cloth can damage the finish and reduce the value drastically. Proper coin handling techniques prevent damage to the coin’s surface, Mint produced or made through another process. Wear and damage reduce the coins worth, particularly when you want to sell Royal Canadian Mint coins.
Cleaning for coins
Destructive cleaning can reduce the value by 50% or more should you want to sell Royal Mint. In some cases an expert can improve the value of an old coin with cleaning, however, for the average collector, there is too much of a risk attached. There are two types of coin cleaning, destructive and nondestructive. The destructive cleaning method uses abrasives or acids to clean (or alter) coin surfaces. Ancient coins, gold or silver coins lose collector’s value as well as precious metal content through using this type of a cleanser. Non-destructive cleaning uses solvents that do not harm the coin’s metal no matter if they are silver, gold, or a modern clad composition. Using a weak soapy solution in distilled water removes dirt and grease from an encrusted coin without damaging it, do not use a detergent. Heavy grime on coins can be removed by soaking it in olive oil for a few months.
Buying and selling Royal Minted coins
The Royal Canadian Mint sells new collector items through its boutiques and online store but does not buy or sell bullion coins directly to the public. Collectors buying or selling should consult with coin dealers.
