Commemorating Victory: The 2025 80th Anniversary of the End of WWII in Europe Coin

November 30, 2024 by Colonial Acres Coins

The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a remarkable new coin that pays tribute to a pivotal moment in world history. The 2025 $20 80th Anniversary of the End of WWII in Europe fine silver coin is a stunning piece that commemorates the Allied victory in Europe during World War II. This exquisite coin not only serves as a beautiful addition to any collection but also as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the triumph of freedom over tyranny.

As we delve into the significance of this coin, we’ll explore its design, the historical context it represents, and the special relationship between Canada and the Netherlands that emerged from the ashes of war. Join us on this journey through time as we honour the past and celebrate the enduring spirit of peace and friendship.

A Design That Tells a Story

Anniversary of the End of WWII in Europe Fine SilverThe 80th Anniversary of the End of WWII in Europe coin is a masterpiece of numismatic art. Crafted from 99.99% pure silver, this proof coin weighs 31.39 grams and measures 38 mm in diameter, making it a substantial and impressive piece.

The reverse of the coin features a powerful and emotive design that captures the essence of victory and liberation. At the center of the design is a triumphant Canadian soldier, arms raised in celebration, symbolizing the joy and relief felt at the end of the war in Europe. Surrounding this central figure are elements that tell the story of Canada’s involvement in the conflict and its special relationship with the Netherlands.

To the left of the soldier, we see a stylized maple leaf, a proud symbol of Canada, intertwined with tulips, representing the Netherlands. This beautiful imagery symbolizes the bond forged between the two nations during and after the war. The background features a subtle pattern reminiscent of the distinctive Canadian uniform worn during World War II, adding depth and historical context to the design.

The Royal Canadian Mint is celebrated for partnering with gifted artists to produce coins that are both visually captivating and rich in historical significance. This particular coin, designed by Neil Hamelin, showcases an impressive level of detail and symbolism, reflecting the skill and thoughtfulness of its creator.

Canada and the Netherlands: A Bond Forged in War

The story behind this coin is one of heroism, sacrifice, and enduring friendship. Canada played a crucial role in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II, a contribution that has not been forgotten by either nation.

In September 1944, Canadian forces, along with other Allied troops, began the arduous task of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. The campaign was long and difficult, with Canadian soldiers fighting their way through flooded lands and fierce resistance. By May 5, 1945, the German forces in the Netherlands had surrendered, bringing an end to five years of occupation and hardship for the Dutch people.

The Canadian contribution to the liberation was significant, with over 7,600 Canadian soldiers losing their lives in the process. This sacrifice created a deep and lasting bond between Canada and the Netherlands, a friendship that continues to this day.

In recognition of this special relationship, May 5th holds dual significance. In the Netherlands, it is celebrated as Liberation Day, marking the end of Nazi occupation. In Canada, it is observed as Dutch Heritage Day, honouring the contributions of Dutch Canadians and commemorating the shared history between the two nations.

One of the most touching symbols of this friendship is the annual Canadian Tulip Festival held in Ottawa. This festival has its roots in a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs sent by Princess Juliana of the Netherlands to Canada in 1945, as a gesture of gratitude for Canada’s role in the liberation and for providing safe haven to the Dutch royal family during the war. Each year, the Netherlands continues to send tulips to Canada, a beautiful reminder of the enduring bond between the two countries.
