One could argue that symbolism is in the very core of humanity; we look to symbols for help on a daily basis. From road signs to school work to the economy and money, we are surrounded by them. Canada is a country that is symbolic of prosperity, peace and good living. Similarly, many things are symbolic of Canada – elks, the great outdoors, nature, industry, economy and the like. But, perhaps the greatest symbol of all when it comes to Canada is the maple leaf – something Royal Canadian Mint coins have featured on numerous occasions.
And rightfully so – the maple leaf is to Canada what pizza is to Italy or wine is to France. This year, among numerous Royal Canadian Mint coins that are meant to become not solely popular collectible coins, but also symbols of this great nation, there is a coin that promises to grow above its intended image of Canada’s most revered national emblem. The milestone in question is the 2017 Canada $20 Gilded Silver Maple Leaf Fine Silver Coin.
Needless to say, the maple leaf continues even today to inspire a sense of belonging and pride in the people it represents; history teaches us that it was first used as a symbol for Canada way back in the 1700s. Since that time, the endeavors of Canadians have transformed the leaf into a shining icon of not only freedom but also inclusion. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that it is used to celebrate 150 years of national history.
The coin is quite unique among Royal Canadian Mint coins in many aspects; for example, it boasts another first for the Mint in the form of selective gold plating on the maple leaf-shaped coin. Furthermore, it is a true feat of engineering, encapsulating stunning gold plating technology, multiple finishes, intricate engraving and, of course, the obvious complexities of recreating the shape of an actual maple leaf. But, most importantly, no challenge is too great when it comes to celebrating Canada via its beloved national emblem, particularly so if we’re talking about the Confederation’s 150th anniversary.
The outstanding craftsmanship is further enhanced by the magnificent contrast between the selective gold plated elements and the 99.99% pure silver surface of the coin. For reference sake, it only took two days for the first maple leaf-shaped coin to be completely sold out. It goes without saying that the leaf-shaped coin will similarly be in demand by collectors due to its symbolic expression of national pride, as well as artistry, both of which in the service of Canada’s milestone year.
