Coin collecting is something that has been in existence for many years. Some people love to collect different coins that represent different eras in our history, while others collect them purely for what they are worth. We take a look at the most expensive coin in the world.
The 1794/5 Flowing Hair Silver/Copper Dollar
This coin is worth $10 million US dollars. It was issued by the Federal Government in 1794 and 1795, and it consists of around 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. This dollar is quite famous and was minted by the Federal Mint. When one of these coins was sold for $10 million in January 2013, at an auction in New York it was definitely a historical moment.
So, why is it so special? Mainly because it was the first dollar coin ever issued by the U.S Government.
The coin had also more than doubled its original value before the auction and the coin’s buyer said that he would have bid much higher if he had to. The coin was also part of a collection by Martin Logies, called the Cardinal Collection. Prior to the auction, it was believed that the coin was valued at around $4.1 million in 1999. ree that this was a highly anticipated sale and it proved to be a big one as well.
The company that bought this valuable coin said, ‘We felt in our heart that this would be the very first coin to exceed the $10 million barrier in auction and were in fact prepared to bid much higher in order to acquire this unique piece of history.’ They also added that they are not planning on selling the coin in future.
The $10 million price tag includes the buyer’s commission and the buyer believes that it’s a great investment for the future. The coin displays Miss Liberty facing right, with stars surrounding her. The stars represent each state in the union.
Another similar coin that fetched high numbers was the 1792 Half Dime, which was sold in 1994 for $975,000. The coin dates back to the first director of the U.S Mint.
