Most coin collectors eventually come across silver bullion. If you are interested in bullion or Canadian precious collectibles, you have likely seen some Beaver Bullion rounds or bars. This is a unique product with some truly Canadian characteristics. It may make an excellent addition to your collection, especially if you are interested in silver bullion.
What Is Beaver Bullion?
Beaver Bullion is a privately owned and operated Canadian silver company. Run by John Masterson, it produces hand-poured bullion products. Most famously, they feature images of beavers. However, the company also makes skulls, snakes and other designs.
Masterson created Beaver Bullion because he loved collecting silver but had a hard time accessing the rare and expensive bullion coins produced by national mints. Furthermore, he found that their owners couldn’t handle such coins because the fine finishes would be instantly marred, reducing the value.
So, he set out to create a more accessible form of silver bullion that collectors could handle without as much worry. The result is a selection of hand-poured silver rounds, bars and other products that Beaver Bullion produces every year.
How Is It Made?
All Beaver Bullion products are hand poured, a relatively unusual process in the modern era. John Masterson describes his process as starting with sourcing silver from high-grade London Bullion Market sources. The large bars are melted and formed into silver shot, a form that is much easier to weigh accurately.
The shot is measured, then melted, and hand poured into the relevant mould. Once the piece has cooled, it is checked for weight and cleaned. This process involves soaking in phosphoric acid to remove flux. Every piece is individually stamped with one of the unique designs that are characteristic of Beaver Bullion.
Why Collect Bullion?
Bullion simply refers to precious metals that haven’t been minted into a coin, ranging from immense corporate-scale ingots of 1,000 ounces to handy 1oz rounds and bars, or smaller. While historically many currencies were struck from precious metals, that is no longer the case, so bullion is the primary way to buy and sell silver and gold.
Additionally, many people collect bullion coins, rounds, bars and more. These pieces often feature some of the most desirable collectible designs. Since they also have intrinsic value due to the precious metal content, they are highly valued among numismatists.
Like all collectible items, silver bullion can range in value significantly depending on the quality of the example. Government-minted items such as silver Eagles, Libertads, Kookaburras and Pandas tend to be highly valued, especially if they are in good condition. However, some people want to collect silver bullion that they can handle and appreciate more directly. That is where Beaver Bullion enters the mix. Their work can be fun to collect because the more natural, hand-poured finish means simply touching them won’t immediately reduce the value.
