Birdwatching, once the hobby of the truly devoted or early risers, surged in popularity when the pandemic began. People were homebound. Birds weren’t. Birdwatching became a way to engage with nature while staying home. Some people call birdwatching meditative. Most believe that birdwatching is stimulating to the mind and can be good for your emotional health. If you love birds and want to enhance your passion, consider collecting Canadian coins that feature birds. You can make them part of a new collection or give them as gifts to share your love of birds.
Colourful Songbirds 5-Coin Set
This five-coin set features five different birds, each one depicted with bright colours on a $10 silver coin:
- Northern Cardinal
- Magnolia Warbler
- Blue Jay
- Baltimore Oriole
- Violet-green Swallow
These coins were designed by Derek C. Wicks and Hélène Girard, prominent wildlife artists. The coins come in a beautiful display box.
2016 $20 Migratory Birds – The Pileated Woodpecker Fine Silver Coin
This $20 coin, minted of fine silver, was part of a series produced in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Birds Convention, a partnership between the U.S. and Canada to protect birds that live in both countries. The pileated woodpecker is mostly black, with white accents and a red crest. It lives in deciduous forests throughout Canada and the United States. As the largest woodpecker still in existence, the pileated woodpecker is thought to have been the basis for the popular cartoon character, Woody Woodpecker, even though his call is based on a different woodpecker. The coin is a beautiful monument to a bird that helps control the insect population.
2017 $10 Birds Among Nature’s Colours Series
These unique coins have a colourful background that showcases some of Canada’s most common birds. This allows the silver outline of the bird to shine through. Although you can purchase individual coins, the set includes all five, the chickadee, northern flicker, tufted titmouse, purple martin and nuthatch. These $10-silver coins are displayed in a beautiful box. They’re a gorgeous depiction of everyday birds.
2019 Canada $30 Majestic Birds
Canada geese, great horned owls and golden eagles are some of Canada’s most iconic birds. This three-coin series depicts each of these birds on a $30 silver coin with a multi-frame hologram that recreates the bird in flight. The obverse of the coin has a lovely portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The set was released throughout 2019, so you can own them all in a deluxe black clamshell display case.
2007-2014 25-cent Birds of Canada Series
This series of coins features many of Canada’s most popular birds. Because the coins are 25 cents in face value, they’re often much more affordable than the higher-value silver coins featured above. These coins would be a great way to share your love of birds with a younger generation. You’ll find a good variety of birds, from the ruby-throated hummingbird to the harlequin duck, rose-breasted grosbeak and American robin. As you collect each coin, you can learn about the bird and then try to spot it in the wild. Each bird is rendered with its natural habitat, in bright colours, to portray the bird in beautiful detail.
