Learn About the 2020 O Canada! Coin Series
The O Canada Series celebrates the iconic and quintessential symbols of Canadian heritage and pride. Each coin is composed of 99.99% pure silver. The subscription set includes a velvet-lined six-coin display case and a postcard signed by all six series artists.
Coin 1: Polar Bears
The polar bear is an amazing animal that has long been recognized as an emblematic representation of the strength and fortitude of the Canadian people. Local wildlife artist Claude Thivierge’s design features a mother polar bear standing guard over her cub at the edge of an icy stream, set against the breathtaking backdrop of the True North’s rugged beauty.
Coin 2: Maple Leaves
The maple leaf, recognized throughout the world as a symbol of Canadian pride, is perhaps the most beloved of all symbols. Canadian artist Virginia Boulay’s fresh take on the famous icon depicts a sugar maple branch bearing five maple leaves. Each leaf features a distinct texture carefully etched into the silver, creating a gorgeous and dimensional display that’s sure to stir feelings of national pride.
Coin 3: Parliament
The design on the third coin in the series, rendered by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw, showcases a timeless view of Parliament Hill in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa. The famous Centennial Flame is visible in the foreground. As the flame rises, it morphs into maple leaves, representing Canadian unity and hope for the future. The Flame is framed by the Centre Block building and Peace Tower in the background.
Coin 4: Changing of the Guard
From mid-June until late August, locals and tourists alike flock to Parliament Hill each morning to watch the Ceremonial Guard, decked out in traditional bearskin hats and scarlet tunics, perform mesmerizing drills, accompanied by the Guard’s regimental band. The pageantry of the Changing of the Guard ceremony, one of Canada’s most popular military traditions, is beautifully depicted on the fourth coin in the series by local artist Pandora Young.
Coin 5: Beaver
The beaver has been an official symbol of Canadian sovereignty since 1975. Beavers are widely found throughout the nation, and beaver pelts were a major driving force in forming and solidifying Canada’s enduring social and economic structure. The beaver’s peaceful and industrious spirit and adaptable nature exemplify some of Canada’s most respected values. Canadian artist Jane Steube’s design features a beaver pausing atop its dam. In the background, a pristine tree-lined stream represents the countless lakes, streams, rivers, and other waterways that traverse the nation.
Coin 6: Great Outdoors
The beauty and allure of the Canadian wilderness are recognized and revered throughout the world. The final coin in the series pays homage to Canada’s majestic outdoor landscape with artwork by artist Claudio D’Angelo. D’Angelo’s design depicts a traditional-style canoe and a pair of wooden oars resting on the rocky banks of an undisturbed natural waterway nestled among tree-covered hills. The scene captures the essence of the Canadian outdoors and the freedom and anticipation of setting out upon an uncharted adventure.
