Coin collecting is an enjoyable hobby, and the newly released 6-Coin Pileated Woodpecker Specimen Set by the Royal Canadian Mint is a great set to add to your collection. It features a remarkable combination of coins with six different designs, each representative of the wonders of Canada.
What does the set include?
The Pileated Woodpecker 6-Coin Set is comprised of one of all the coins ranging from five cents to two dollars. Each coin features a representation of the Pileated woodpecker, which is an essential part of Canadian forests, and the largest of the woodpecker species in the country. This collector series has been a tradition since 2008, and each year the coins are dedicated to an essential Canadian bird.
All of the six coins feature an obverse side designed by Susanna Blunt. Ms. Blunt is a famous Canadian artist, who specializes in portraits. Her depiction of Queen Elizabeth II was chosen for this year’s Pileated Woodpecker 6-Coin Set.
For the reverse side of the coins, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to feature the works of six different artists, which were originally used in the coins that were introduced in regular circulation. The one dollar coin was designed by Jean-Charles Daumas who also worked on the 2014 Canada Goose coins. Mr. Daumas found inspiration from one of his personal photographs of a Pileated Woodpecker The two-dollar coin features a representation of the bear created by Brent Townsend.
All of the coins are neatly gathered in a luxurious book-style box, which comes with a removable lens to keep your coins protected, while they are on display.
What is special about this set?
One of the most recognizable traits of the set is that it is strictly exclusive, which means you can only get any of the featured coins if you order the whole set. The Royal Canadian Mint intended this to be so because the whole idea behind the set is to showcase the brilliance of designs used on traditional circulation coins.
The Pileated Woodpecker design is remarkable on its own, and the headliner of this collection, but you shouldn’t underestimate the other coins of the set. Every single one of the designs is representative of traditional Canadian imagery and symbols, highlighting the rich history and nature of the country.
The set includes six different coin denominations, and they all come in different shapes and sizes. The smallest coin of the set is the three-ply nickel finish plated steel 10 cent piece, which only weighs 1.75 grams. The largest coin of the set is the steel and brass plated two dollar coin, which has a diameter of 28 millimetres and weighs close to 7 grams.
