Among the first steps in forming your very own coin collection, doing proper and thorough research is the most important. When researching numismatics-related theory and practice, you will come across countless different and interesting coin pieces, like the Canadian Silver Dollar. Gathering information can help you better understand what to look for and what kind of value can expect from your collection in the future.

Canadian Silver Dollar: Various Types Of Coins

When it comes to numerous different coins minted by the Canadian Royal Mint, such as the Canadian Silver Dollar, there are four basic types:

  • Gold coins
  • Silver coins
  • Platinum coins
  • Innovative coins

Gold Coins

In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint became the first refinery in the world to produce 99.99% (9999) pure gold bullion coins. It achieved a similar breakthrough again in 1999 by becoming the first Mint in the world to achieve 99.999% (99999) fine gold purity. Unique characteristics of these coins include:

  • Because it cannot decay, tarnish or rust, gold is nearly impossible to destroy
  • 99.999% pure gold is the absolute highest standard of gold available in the world
  • Gold coins are a huge draw to collectors as they are typically minted in small numbers

Silver Coins

One of the most popular examples of Canadian silver coins is the Canadian Silver Dollar. The Royal Canadian Mint guarantees 99.99% purity levels for both its gold and silver refinery. This ensures the implementation of world-class security protocols at every stage of the minting process. Here are some interesting facts about silver:

  • Silver can endure extreme temperatures in addition to being reflective of light, pliable and strong
  • Silver requires little to no maintenance and will not easily decay
  • Certain silver coins can be used as legal tender even today
  • Silver has been used to pay debts and store wealth for more than four millennia

Platinum Coins

One of the most famous platinum coins in the world is the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf bullion coin. It has continuously been minted at a purity of 99.95% (9995) platinum since its first release in 1988. Platinum characteristics include:

  • Platinum will not tarnish over time despite its resemblance to silver
  • Platinum shares many of the same properties as gold, as it is a natural element
  • Platinum is essentially a precious metal of a silvery-white colour

Innovative Coins

The level of innovation in the art and science of coin manufacturing in the minting industry continues to rise today more than ever. For example, the Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai was the world’s first-ever photo-luminescent coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. Once the coin was placed in darkness, the dinosaur image turned into a skeleton. Thanks to its popularity, all subsequent releases of the “glow-in-the-dark” series have sold out quickly. Today, groundbreaking effects and designs are available for coin collectors, such as:

  • Plasma effect, which is a jewel-like finish on a coin
  • High relief, which features a raised design high above the background of a coin
  • Gem inserts, crystal elements, unique shapes, holograms and multiple colours
