The George Cook Collection is going to be displayed and sold at an upcoming auction, held by a veteran in the coin collection world, Heritage Auctions. This is the fullest collection of Canadian coins worldwide. It will be presented at the World’s Fair of Money, which will be held between August 13th and 19th 2019. Do not miss your chance to visit one of the stops of this exclusive collection, as it will probably not stay as it is for long, once the auction starts.
Some Very Rare Collectibles
Some of the rarest pieces of the collection include classics like Canada’s 1911 Silver dollar and the finest example of a 1936 Dot Cent. There are only two known examples of the 1911 Silver dollar, which until recently held the record for most valuable coin in the world. There is also a single Bronze version of the coin. The 1936 Dot Cent is another extremely rare coin, as only three pieces were ever minted. This small penny has become one of the holy grails of coin collecting, and one of them was recently sold for $253,000 at an auction. You can see the magnitude of the coin’s price considering its face value is a single penny. Such specimens rarely change collections, considering their rarity and price, which makes Cook’s collection even more remarkable.
Canadian collections are generally one of the most valuable ones, however, George Cook had one of the most valuable collections worldwide. His catalogue is believed to consist of exclusive sets and specific coin issues, as he was always wanted to have every single example of a given coin.
Other impressive additions to his collection are an example of an 1875 25-cent coin, and a 1916-C sovereign, two coins which are both exclusive to George Cook’s private collection.
George Cook was also the owner of the 1921 50-cent coin, which is known as one of the most valuable Canadian coins ever. The 50-cent was also known as ‘The King of Canadian Coins’. This combination of rare and valuable collectibles makes this an irresistible collection, which must be seen.
Who is George Cook?
George Cook was born to a humble family in Europe, which was still shaken by the effects of the war so in 1951 he decided to emigrate to Canada. Professionally he was a construction manager, however, he developed a serious passion for coin collecting. His collection is more than 25 years old, which takes a lot of dedication.
Mr. Cook was one of the best-recognized coin collectors in the numismatic world because he always found a way to acquire the rarest coins in the world. Considering the magnitude of the collection, Heritage Auctions has decided to first let it travel around Canada so that Canadian coin collectors can enjoy this masterpiece.
While Mr. Cook did have an impressive collection, his main interest resided in the history of each coin, and not the volume of his collection. His lifelong passion turned into a remarkable variety of coins because of his tremendous dedication and interest in history, so it is now considered a historical collection itself.
