If you are looking to add an interesting piece of Canadian paper money to your collection, think about finding a banknote that is of great value – the $25 commemorative note. This is a limited-edition note and it commemorates the silver jubilee of King George V. At the same time, there are many more interesting details related to this banknote that make it one-of-a-kind. In order to learn more, keep on reading.

Interesting Facts

You may not be aware of the fact that there was a time when the Bank of Canada issued $25 bills. While this is a little-known fact about Canada’s monetary history, it was and still is of great importance for coin and paper money collectors around the world. Namely, this was a limited-edition commemorative banknote and it was issued only for a short period in 1935 in order to honour the silver jubilee of King George V who was Canada’s reigning monarch at the time. Therefore, on the obverse of the note, there is a depiction of the King and his wife, Queen Mary. On the back of the note, there is an engraved image of Windsor Castle, which was one of the royal family’s official residences.

The Value Of $25 Back In The Day

In the midst of the Great Depression, according to the Bank of Canada’s inflation calculator, $25 was equivalent to $466.32 in today’s dollars. In 1935, for example, $25 could get you five nights at a resort in the Rockies. Or, you could take home a 45-piece household linens set (together with bedding, towels, and napkins). If you like nice clothes, one $25 banknote would buy you a fully tailored suit for men or a topcoat for women. Naturally, since 1935, purchasing power has continuously risen. This means that by 1955, this amount of money was enough for you to buy a suit jacket or a portable radio. In 1995 its value lessened and you could only get a ski rental package or a monthly phone bill. Today, $25 will get you a movie ticket, popcorn and a drink.

Do you have a $25 note? Here’s what you can do!

At this point, the remaining 1,840 notes have been removed of their legal tender status. And while you can no longer purchase items at a store with the note, it doesn’t mean it is worthless. The Bank of Canada will honour the face value of the note if you would like to trade it in. But you should know, there is also a possibility some of these notes could be worth more to collectors.  If you have a $25 note in your possession, doing a little research about it before making a decision could net you a tidy little sum of money. And if you don’t feel comfortable enough completing the research on your own, a professional numismatist will be able to properly appraise it for you. You could even decide to hang on to this piece of Canadian history for your own enjoyment. The choice is yours!
