One of the most beloved series of coins that the Royal Mint has issued so far is definitely the one themed with discovering nature. These Canadian coins carry the face value of 50 cents and feature the images of wildlife in Canada. The series started with the 1995 set and the birds of Canada which immediately became a hit among collectors. The last set from the series was in 2000 and featured birds of prey on the reverse. Devoted numismatists try to find all of the six sets from this series in order to show appreciation for the beautiful wildlife that calls Canada home. Read on if you want more information on the design of each set from the series:

1995 On The Wing: Birds Of Canada Set

The first ever sterling 50 cent coin set that was issued in 1995 and featured birds native to Canada on the reverse. There are four coins in total made of silver and a bit of copper as well. The birds that are featured on the coins are the Whooping Crane, Atlantic Puffins, White-Tailed Ptarmigans and Grey Jays. The engraved images of birds stand out thanks to the black background in contrast with silver. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on all six sets from this series.

The 1996 Little Wild Ones Set

The second set from the Discovering Nature series features young and playful wildlife in Canada. The cute little animals shown on the reverse are wood ducklings, black bear cubs, a moose calf and cougar kittens. All of these animals are native to Canada and are absolutely adorable as well. The four coins are nicely packaged in the original Royal Canadian Mint box which is perfect to keep the coins in or to gift to someone who likes animals and collecting coins.

The 1997 Dogs Of Canada

This set features four different breeds of dogs that have originated in Canada. The dogs are the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, the Newfoundland, the Canadian Eskimo dog and the Labrador Retriever. The Royal Mint created this set in order to honour the friendly and loyal pups that have been making perfect pets and companions to a lot of people in Canada.

1998 Ocean Giants-Whales Set

The four coins in the 1998 set feature four different whales that can be seen in the waters of Canada. These include the Killer Whale, the Beluga Whale, the Blue Whale and the Humpback Whale. All of these graceful giants have been beautifully engraved to show them swimming or jumping out of the water.

The 1999 Cats Of Canada Set

If you are a cat lover, the 1999 cats of Canada set is the right pick for you. It features both wild cats and domestic ones that make perfect pets: the Lynx, the Tonkinese, the Cougar and the Cymric. Unlike the domestic cats on the coins, the wild ones have their natural habitat shown in the background.

The 2000 Birds Of Prey Set

The last set in the series features the following birds: the Osprey, the Bald Eagle, the Red-Tailed Hawk and the Great Horned Owl. The Royal Mint wanted to commemorate these birds that are native to Canada. The four-piece set seemed a perfect option to engrave these amazing birds that are indigenous to Canada and known to be great hunters.
