There aren’t many people who haven’t heard about the game of basketball, but few are aware of the fact that a man from Canada actually invented it. His name is James Naismith and he was a physical education professor from Almonte, Ontario. The Canadian Royal Mint has created a beautiful pure silver coin to celebrate this sport and its inventor. They came up with the first-ever coloured coin with the shape of a convex to accent the actual rounded shape of a basketball and the dimples on it. The precision and attention to detail is something you’ll notice right away and it is exactly why you should purchase one to enlarge your collection. Read on to get all the information regarding the invention of basketball and this unique coin that celebrates it.

How the Game of Basketball Came to Be

It all started in 1891. In need of a pastime activity, a Canadian professor James Naismith came up with what was going to become one of the most popular sports in the world. He was trying to keep the students occupied and active in the gymnasium class, so an idea popped up and he wrote down the rules for the game. After sorting everything out, he grabbed a peach basket that actually retained the bottom, nailing it on an elevated track. Since the balls had to be retrieved manually, it eventually became inconvenient, so the bottom of the basket was removed. With the introduction of open-ended nets in 1913, the whole endeavour of getting the ball back was made easier.

The First-Ever Coloured Silver Coin Celebrating Basketball

The design of this unique piece with the 25 dollar face value was created by another highly talented Canadian, Glen Green. He put a lot of effort in order to make this piece stand out from other coins offered to dedicated collectors. The thing that makes this coin so special is the fact that it is the first-ever convex-shaped and coloured silver coin offered by the Canadian Royal Mint. The artist has shown a remarkable set of skills, being able to depict plenty of details and the actual rounded shape of a basketball. The coin shows two players in the foreground, the player on right trying to block a slam dunk. Glen Green succeeded in showing the essence of a fast-paced game and included the dates “1891-2016” marking 125 years since the invention of basketball. Susanna Blunt was responsible for the obverse, designing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

A Perfect Gift or Addition to Any Coin Collection

The pure silver 25 dollar coin that celebrates basketball, a sport invented by a Canadian, is surely a must-have for any numismatist’s collection. The true essence of this famous game was masterfully represented on the coloured, silver coin with a rounded shape. Any fan of basketball would doubtlessly be ecstatic to receive this valuable piece of art. You can find one on the Colonial Acres website with free shipping and in a nice maroon clamshell package with black beauty box. Show your appreciation and pride by purchasing a coin that praises the invention of basketball by the legendary Canadian professor James Naismith.
