A Hockey Player with a Long and Storied Career
When Doug Gilmour first joined the Cornwall Royals, he was a solid defensive forward and was also able to score pretty well. But his size was considered to be a stumbling stone by many NHL scouts. This was something that also posed a worrisome fact to the management of St. Louis at the time. In spite of this, he showed that he could score a great number of goals and points. As a matter of fact, he even got the nickname “Killer” from his teammate Brian Sutter for his intensity. Only four years after his professional career started, Doug Gilmour was selected to represent Team Canada at the 1987 Canada Cup. He scored some of the most important goals and ended up helping Canada win the tournament.
The Hardware to Back it Up
Doug Gilmour is one of the few players that managed to write the history of hockey. He is frequently mentioned for the trophies he won with his teams and the records he set, among other things. He won the Stanley Cup in 1989, as well as the Frank J. Selke Trophy in the 1992-1993 season. In addition to this, he was noted two times for scoring most points during one season. In the season of 1982-1983, he scored 177 points, while during the 1992-1993 season the number was 127. He is fondly remembered for his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs. And the organization, in recognition of Gilmour’s lasting endearment among fans, honoured him by retiring his number 93 in 2009.
A Coin Worthy of the Player
This coin is actually a tribute to one of the iconic and legendary Canadian captains. The reverse features a colourful image of Doug, while on the obverse there is an engraving of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to this, the coin also features the Maple Leafs logo.
