In January the Royal Canadian Mint released a new dollar coin that is the perfect way to celebrate Canada. At Colonial Acres Coins, we have both the Oh Canada dollar coin and the complete five-coin gift set. If you are looking for something that can be a beautiful addition to a coin collection and a lovely celebration of the nation, this is the right piece for you.
The 2021 Oh Canada Dollar
This special dollar coin is not available in circulation or even for retail purchase. It has been carefully removed from the gift set, meaning you are unlikely to find this in original, uncirculated condition anywhere else.
The reverse design is a simple yet wonderful image. It depicts a hand waving a small Canadian flag, which reminds us of those paper flags that one receives as part of Canada Day celebrations. It is a pleasant reminder of the symbols and traditions that unite all Canadians. In addition to the image, the reverse also includes the words “Canada” and “Dollar 2021.”
The obverse features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susanna Blunt. The coin is three-ply brass-plated steel and weighs 6.27 grams. It is 26.5 millimetres in diameter, with a brilliant uncirculated finish and a plain edge.
The 2021 Oh Canada Gift Set
Alternatively, the gift set containing the dollar coin is also available. The Oh Canada gift set is an annual tradition that began in 1994.
The 2021 version includes the Canadian dollar coin described above. It is accompanied by uncirculated two-dollar, 25-cent, 10-cent and 5-cent coins. These are the standard circulation coins from 2021.
All the coins come packaged together in an attractive display folder, the front of which recalls a taste of home: maple syrup in an appropriately shaped jar. The inside flap of the folder also includes some information about maple leaves and trees in Canada. This gift set can be a lovely addition to any collection, especially for someone who has enjoyed getting the Oh Canada gift sets from each year.
As Canadian as Maple Syrup
Maple syrup was one of the themes for this year’s gift set. One of the most famous nods to the maple tree is found on the Canadian flag that flies worldwide. Of course, the country’s history with these trees is much older.
Indigenous peoples from northeastern Canada were the first to produce maple syrup. They created numerous dishes, and traditions became centred around this food. It was also viewed as a valuable source of energy and nutrition.
When Europeans first arrived in the area, the local peoples showed them how to produce the syrup. For many Indigenous people, the syrup was a valuable trading good.
Today, maple syrup continues to be an important part of the economy. On average, Canada produces more than 80% of the total world supply of maple syrup each year. So it is a fitting symbol for the country that is recognizable worldwide.
