About the Artist

The artwork on the reverse of this coin is the product of renowned Canadian artist Robert Bateman. Bateman specializes in capturing the natural and nature-inspired scene in what he considers, ‘a labour of love’. Wildlife animals are typical subjects of his work and he strives to represent them in as natural a form as

possible, which is why they are often seen in their natural habitats. 

The original work reflected on the coin is entitled ‘Into the Light – Lion’ and captures a scene in nature in which a lion struts, mouth agape as if in mid-roar’ in the savannah just at the break of dawn. On the original painting, the clear blue sky is a backdrop against which the goldish brown of the lion and the savannah grass are set. On the reverse of the coin, the artist Robert Bateman’s exquisite rendering of the lion in its natural habitat pulls you into the marvelous world of Mother Nature where strength, dominion, and survival stand above all else.
