Canadian waters are home to over 50 species of whales. Thankfully, there is a great deal of whale watching sites where you can really appreciate the beauty of these magnificent marine mammals. The Royal Canadian Mint in collaboration with Dave Zachary decided to create a beautiful coin to celebrate these creatures. The result is a unique piece with a soapstone sculpture of a whale’s tail. It has a 50 dollar face value and a wide diameter to hold the carved model. It comes nicely packaged making it a perfect gift as well. Read on to find out all the details about the coin and the talented sculptor Dave Zachary.

The Design in Greater Detail

This incredibly unique piece features a multi-dimensional design with a hand-carved soapstone sculpture and a translucent enamel on the coin. Cecily Mok, the Royal Canadian Mint engraver, applied this blue, glassy substance to represent the sea in Northern Canada. The tail is peeking above the surface while the humpback whale and its calf can be distinguished in the see-through waters. The Aboriginal artist, Dave Zachary, was able to create a smooth arch for a better representation of a whale in the sea and the act of fluking. Each and every one of these coins will have a slightly different colour and marbling variation because of the minerals that mix with the soapstone. The coin also displays the word “CANADA” on the ice floes at the top as well as the 50 dollar face value and the year 2018. The obverse carries the engraving of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

The Story Behind the Sculptor

Dave Zachary started following his father’s footsteps from a young age; he began showing interest and talent early on and sculpting soapstone eventually became his profession. Even though his sculptures receive much praise today, he got off to a rocky start. People weren’t taking him seriously at all and showed no interest in seeing his work. They simply couldn’t believe that he was able to carve so skillfully at the age of eighteen. His many failed attempts didn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams so Zachary created a website that became an online shop with all of his work displayed. The Royal Canadian Mint wanted an experienced and talented artist for a special silver piece. They chose Dave Zachary and their joint effort resulted in a coin that promises to be a beautiful addition to any collection and something you just can’t stop looking at.

Low Mintage, High Value: Hurry And Get Your Own!

The Whale’s Tail Soapstone Coin is a real masterpiece that portrays a beautiful technique of carving and minting. This silver piece is a marvelous addition to any coin collection and a specimen that is worthy of your admiration. It features a whale’s tale and the ice-cold waters in Northern Canada – the see-through substance unravels a whale and the calf by its side swimming in the sea. Released by the Royal Canadian Mint, this piece really stands out among countless other collectible coins minted by the legendary institution. It does a wonderful job of portraying the gracefulness of these mammals in their natural habitat. You’ll receive this coin in a nicely packaged black beauty box that will prevent it from any damage. The mintage is pretty low, so hurry and get your own before it’s sold out.
