Superman has captured the hearts and minds of fans for over 75 years and his popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Beginning in 1938 as a comic book superhero in tights and a cape with a secret identity as Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter, Superman has evolved from a simple character in a child’s comic into an international icon featured in television, movies, toys, video games and Superman coins, among other things.
With the exception of a green glowing rock from his home planet of Krypton, nothing can harm Superman. He is physically indestructible, fights for and protects the weak, and lives by a strong moral code that resonates with both children and adults all over the world. These are just some of the reasons The Man of Tomorrow continues to be an admired cultural figure to this day.
Superman’s Continued Appeal in Popular Culture
One of the many reasons Superman’s popularity has remained high over the decades is due to his adaptation to the changing culture. Superman’s slogan of fighting for “truth and justice” in the early comics evolved into a more patriotic “truth, justice, and the American way” after World War II began. In the 1950’s and ’60’s he seemed to embody the ideal American male, physically muscular and morally sound, with no flaws.
Then Hollywood decided to make him more human. In the late 1970’s, the movie version of Superman starring Christopher Reeve showed a more realistic hero, who had weaknesses and wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable. In movies, television, and comics, Superman continues to mature and change with each passing decade, adding even more admirers to his ever-growing fan base.
2013 Canada $20 Superman & Metropolis Coin Release
To celebrate Superman’s 75th anniversary, The Royal Canadian Mint, Official Licensee of DC Comics, introduced the 2013 Canada $20 Superman & Metropolis Coin. This coin is a reverse image collector’s item and it marks the first appearance of The Man of Steel on a Royal Canadian Mint coin. - The coin has a spectacular holographic effect as Superman breaks the sound barrier and creates a sonic boom while flying over Metropolis and The Daily Planet.
- ’75 Years of Superman’ appears on the coin in English and French, and “Superman” is written in Kryptonian, Superman’s fictitious native language.
