$20 Silver Coin Celebrates the Yukon’s 125th Anniversary
Yukon, the westernmost territory in Canada, is also the smallest and least populated. However, it has had a lasting impact on the country. It is home to some of the oldest archeological evidence of human settlement in North America and contains the site of the famous Klondike Gold Rush.
The Milestone
This commemorative coin celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush and the establishment of the Yukon Territory. In 1898, the influx of prospectors and businesses catering to them caused the splitting of the Northwest Territories and the Yukon into two separate jurisdictions.
The Yukon Coins
The Royal Canadian Mint’s 38 mm, 99.99% silver coins immortalize this historic moment. The face of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in profile, designed by Susanna Blunt.
On the reverse, the coin depicts several aspects of First Nations culture and history. The artist, Jean Taylor, is a member of the Tlingit.
Taylor included Wolf and Crow, important figures in the kinship systems of Yukon’s First Nations people, in the foreground. Behind them, Taylor depicted a singing Indigenous woman on the Yukon coins with a drum in her hand and an image of the midnight sun, all encompas
sed by the outline of the Yukon.
150th Anniversary of Prince Edward Island Joining Confederation
Prince Edward Island is one of Canada’s Maritime Provinces and has the smallest amount of geographic territory. Located on Canada’s east coast, it is one of the oldest settlements in the country. It is also the only Canadian province that has no territory on the mainland.
In 1864, P.E.I was the location of the Charlottetown Conference. This conference was the first meeting in a series of discussions that eventually led to the formation of the Canadian Confederation.
The Milestone
In 2023 this Royal Canadian Mint coin marks the 150th Anniversary of Prince Edward Island joining the Canadian Confederation. On July 1, 1873, Prince Edward Island became Canada’s seventh province.
The Prince Edward Island Coins
The 38 mm, 99.99% silver Prince Edward Island $20 coin commemorates this anniversary with a collage of symbols and locations important to the province.
As with the Yukon coins, the face of the Prince Edward Island coin shows Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in profile.
The reverse of the coin includes two iconic landmarks of P.E.I: the Confederation Bridge, the roadway connecting the province to the mainland, and the white and red heritage lighthouse. Behind these landmarks sit the outline of the island and the image of the waves that lap against its shores.
Also on the reverse of the coin, you can see the Prince Edward Island coat of arms. The coat of arms includes an oak tree and its saplings growing on a green island beneath the heraldic lion of England. Along the bottom of the reverse, you can see Prince Edward Island’s floral emblem, a type of orchid called the lady’s slipper.
