In the summer of 1969, the world-famous Beatles singer John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono held a unique demonstration as a peaceful objection to the Vietnam War which was taking place at the time. They hosted a ‘bed-in’ in Montreal at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, which involved making themselves available to the public (while reclining in bed together) to discuss matters pertaining to world peace.  This is exactly the type of moment that deserves to be commemorated on Canadian silver coins and thanks to Royal Canadian Mint, this is now a reality with the release of the Give Peace a Chance Silver Canadian Coin of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The iconic Canadian moment was shared by millions around the world as were the sentiments for the replacement of war with peace. It took place during a time of war, the Vietnam war (1955-1975) to be precise. The war is notorious for the numerous atrocities committed as well as the high levels of human carnage. Released 50 years after the creative and very significant protest by these two celebrity figures, this coin seeks to serve as a reminder of the anti-war efforts shared by millions of people around the globe.

The world famous peace anthem ‘Give Peace a Chance’ was also a product of this moment in time and the very same location as well (in fact, the recording took place in the hotel room). This song, which is also being commemorated by the coin, went on to inspire advocacy for peace around the world.

What You’ll See When You Look at this Coin

On the reverse, you’ll see a replication of the picture of John and Yoko captured by Ivor Sharp. The image is enhanced by different shades of black and white, carefully applied to make the image realistic while maintaining the black and white aura of the 60s. It depicts the iconic couple in bed sitting next to each other smiling peacefully. Each is holding a long-stemmed rose. John’s rose is darker in hue while Yoko Ono’s rose is white. Behind them, you can see parts of the peace-promoting posters they erected as part of their message. The coin’s face value of twenty dollars is also on the reverse.

On the obverse, you will see the Susanna Blunt designed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. This coin is 99.99% pure silver with serrated edges, a diameter of 38 millimetres and it has a proof finish.

Why You Should Own this Coin

This coin presents you with the opportunity to share in an important moment that took place fifty years ago. The iconic moment in Canadian and world history has been immortalized in precious metal for you to relive at your own convenience. It also serves as a marker of your own support for the preservation of world peace. Without a doubt, of course, it is also the ideal gift to present to someone who is an advocate for peace. In addition to all this, it is a valuable investment piece that promises to appreciate in value with time. Undoubtedly, this is one of those Canadian silver coins that is well worth acquisition

When you buy this coin, it will be presented to you in a beautiful clamshell box bearing the distinctive Royal Canadian Mint mark. Additionally, like all other Canadian silver coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin comes with its own proof of authenticity – a serialized certificate from the mint.
