Canadian commemorative coins offer a unique and meaningful way to celebrate significant occasions, acting as tangible keepsakes of moments that have shaped your family’s history. These cherished tokens not only help us remember, but they also allow us to share these memories with our loved ones, creating a bond that transcends generations.
More than just collectibles, Canadian historical coins serve as a tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to service – be it in the military, police, or other organizations. Continue reading to learn about some coins in Colonial Acres’ store released by the Royal Canadian Mint over the years that encapsulate important moments and milestones in Canada’s rich tapestry of history.
Coins That Represent WWI Battlefront and Aircraft
Canada’s presence in World War I and World War II should not be forgotten. If you had a family member serve during one of these wars, these coins are a nice way to remember their service. In the first war, over 650,000 Canadians served to support the Allied nations. In the Second World War, over 1.1 million Canadian men and women served in the military. In both wars, Canadians at home contributed to the effort.
These three coins are just a few we are highlighting from past Royal Canadian Mint commemorative coin releases.
- 2017 Canada $20 WWI Battlefront – The Battle of Passchendaele – this coin remembers the mud-soaked battle in Belgium. It’s a coin that reminds us of the cost of war and commemorates this important battle of the Great War.
- 2015 Canada $20 The Canadian Home Front – Canada’s First Submarines – the Royal Canadian Navy was only 4 years old in 1914 when two new submarines were added to protect Canada’s West Coast.
- 2017 Canada $20 WWII Battlefront – The Battle of Dieppe – this battle on the north coast of France was supposed to boost the Allied morale, but it was a complete failure. Over half of the 6,000 forces, who were predominantly Canadian, were wounded, taken prisoner or killed. However, what the Allies learned from this assault influenced later successes in the war.
Canadian Homefront Coin Series
Although the two great wars were fought overseas, there were plenty of threats at home. Canada had to protect its borders against U-boats. The railway system was vital to Canada’s war effort. Trains transported goods across the country. The railroad took men and women off to war and brought them home again. Canadians trained in the country before going overseas. Remember the sacrifices made at home with these coins that celebrate Canada’s role.
Coins That Celebrated Canada’s 150th Anniversary
The sesquicentennial of any country is a reason for celebration. In 2017, when Canada held its 150th birthday, the Royal Canadian Mint created many special coins that honoured the event.
The My Canada, My Inspiration 2017 coin collection is a celebration of Canadian diversity and heritage, exclusively designed for Canada’s 150th anniversary. These unique coins, reflecting our nation’s rich history, were created by fellow Canadians through the My Canada, My Inspiration contest. This collection genuinely captures Canada’s essence, turning each coin into a historical symbol of national pride.
The Mint also issued separate $10 fine silver coins that celebrate the best of Canada. One coin features the great blue heron. Another coin celebrates the grizzly bear. Some of Canada’s most popular and recognizable landmarks are featured, the lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, Panmure Island and Peyto Lake. These coins are colourized to capture the true beauty of these Canadian icons.
