The holiday season can be fun and exciting, especially for children. Nevertheless, if you have a child in your life, it can be challenging to choose a gift that he or she will truly love. This year, consider the range of collectible Canadian coins for sale when thinking about a gift for a child. There are many coin designs that align with children’s interests, and the gift may spark an interest in coin collecting that could last a lifetime.
Here are some suggestions of coins for kids that could make great holiday gifts.
Cartoon Characters
Animation allows the creators of cartoons to create fantastic situations for comedy to occur outside the bounds of physics. Cartoon characters also do not age, meaning that they can continue to delight children and adults alike for decades. Take Looney Tunes, for example. The series was created in 1930, prior to the advent of television. Originally, Looney Tunes shorts ran in movie theatres in front of feature films. Yet even today, Bugs Bunny continues to be an instantly recognizable cultural icon.
In 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint released a series of Looney Tunes coins featuring Bugs and two of his frequent antagonists, Daffy Duck and Marvin the Martian. The Bugs Bunny coin features the “wascally wabbit” standing in a relaxed pose, snacking on a carrot, and no doubt planning mischief. The Marvin the Martian coin shows the nondescript little alien, with his incongruous centurion’s helmet and sneakers, looking through a telescope and waiting for the “Earth-shattering kaboom” that isn’t coming thanks to Bugs Bunny.
Of course, there are many cartoon characters that kids love besides Looney Tunes. Sonic the Hedgehog started out as a video game character in 1991, then became the star of his own cartoon and, more recently, a hybrid movie series of live-action and CGI. The year 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of Sonic’s debut, and the RCM released a commemorative coin in his honour to mark the occasion.
Sports Coins
Kids love sports, whether it is as spectators, players, or both. Monarch Precious Metals has created a unique series of silver rounds that celebrate your child’s enthusiasm. They use unique rounds that are curved or dome-shaped rather than flat and strike them three times each to produce rounds that have the appearance of either a baseball, a soccer ball, or a basketball. The curved rounds add an extra dimension to the coins.
Superhero Coins
Superheroes have leaped off the pages of comic books to star in movies and television series, both live-action and animated. Each previous generation introduces the characters to their children, who in turn become fans. As a result, the characters are constantly reinvented, yet stay consistent with the ideals that made them beloved in the first place.
One of the most popular comic book characters in the world is Superman, a character that has Canadian roots as one of his creators, Joe Shuster, was born in Ontario. The Royal Canadian Mint has issued many commemorative coins honouring the Man of Steel. Here are a few notable examples:
- A coin featuring Superman in flight against an achromatic hologram background in 2013
- A coin referencing the cover of the Superman Annual #1 in 2014
- A coin celebrating the release of the movie “Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016
There are many more commemorative coins featuring superheroes and comic book characters available. If the child in your life is a superhero fan, you can find one that he or she will especially like.
Encourage Interest in Coin Collecting With Holiday Coins
A coin related to a child’s interests makes a thoughtful gift he or she can treasure forever. It may spark an interest in collecting coins or memorabilia related to the interest. Either way, collecting can be a fun and sometimes lucrative hobby. See our section for young collectors for gift ideas to put a smile on a child’s face.
