Any numismatist should be proud to own it since it significantly enriches every collection by beautifully linking the coin to the historical event. It portrays impressive accomplishments that took place during these fifty years, starting from the eve of Confederation. On the main piece, which is the biggest coin in the set, the Centre Block Of Parliament can be seen. It is largely known as the political heart of the country and was unfortunately ruined from the fire that happened In 1916. The pictures on the remaining thirteen pieces were carefully chosen to depict the progress and all of the stunts and evolving traditions of the young Canada. All of them combine to represent different themes during the first fifty years of self-government. Some are connected to industry, others to culture or transport.
The Design in Detail
The primary material is silver but touches of gold can be seen on the outer edges of the centre piece and on the frames of the thirteen pieces. All of the photographs were carefully chosen to give voice to the period of prosperity and growth of Canada. They were all taken from the Library and Archives Canada collection and included in the set to create a beautiful piece of art. Tony Bianco is the artist behind the design of the stunning centre coin and the picture of the Parliament built in 1866. The surrounding pieces carry sepia-coloured images and the side of the central coin has the effigies of the monarchs engraved by different sculptors. Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and King George V, while the remaining pieces have the image of Queen Elizabeth on the obverse.
